Finnish wool socks keep your feet warm all year round. The wool yarn used is spun from three different sheep breeds to get just the right properties of wool socks: warmth, breathability and a pleasantly soft feel on bare feet. The tip and base of the wool sock are reinforced. Made from a blend of 70% wool / 30% polyamide, they can withstand even harsh wear.
Helsingin Villasukkatehdas Oy is the only traditional wool sock factory left in Finland. Much of the making of wool socks is precise craftsmanship. Every wool sock leaving the factory is inspected one by one, and high and consistent quality is part of their Finnish values. The end result is a very tight-fitting, very hard-wearing and very warming wool sock.
Wool is a very hygroscopic animal fiber – it can absorb up to 30-40% of its weight of moisture without feeling wet. By binding moisture, wool releases heat. This, together with the inherent thermal insulation of wool, results in the excellent warmth and breathability of traditional Finnish wool socks.
Care
One of the good natural properties of wool is its dirt repellency. Adhering dirt usually leaves wool socks well, especially when dry, and often mere shaking and ventilation is enough for treatment.
However, wool socks in active use should also be washed from time to time, either by hand or machine. 86 degree Fahrenheit machine wash and short spin are perfect for our wool socks. We recommend using a pH-neutral detergent (pH 7).
In hand washing, the washing and rinsing water should be at the same temperature, less than 104 degrees. Large hot and cold water fluctuations as well as heavy rubbing can make the wool felt.
Wool socks are good to shape when wet and dry at low temperatures. We do not recommend drying wool socks above 160 degrees, eg with a hot radiator, in a sauna or too close to a campfire. Thanks to its breathability, wool dries quite briskly even without high heat.
Finally, in active use, the wool yarn gradually stretches, and the wool sock thus loses its original shape. Regular washing at a suitable temperature restores the shape of the wool sock, and even slightly damp wool socks can be easily adapted to the shape of your foot simply by putting them on your foot as a little washing damp.
